How to make cute Halloween snowflakes (Ghost, Bat, and Pumpkin!)

Growing up, my mom always had the cutest seasonal decorations. As soon as the cool weather hit, she put out little glass pumpkins, hand-embroidered fall leaf table runners, and decorative foliage & candles on the mantle.

In my house, I can’t seem to find the time to put up OR take down decorations! I just took down the “Happy Birthday” sign that has been up since May… I also may or may not have just found a framed Christmas postcard that never came down from last year (and is now staying up for this year).

I think my kids have caught on to the “mom isn’t going to decorate” thing, so they’ve taken it upon themselves to decorate our house for every major and minor holiday. Right now they’ve plastered the front door with spooky Halloween decorations that they’ve colored & cut out. Pretty cute! Works for me!

In an attempt to be more holiday-aware, I got out some colored origami paper yesterday and started experimenting with Halloween snowflakes. They were a HIT with the kids! We’re working on making a colorful Halloween banner to hang in the newly empty spot where the Happy Birthday banner just came down :)

Gather your supplies

I used 6x6” colored origami paper for these snowflakes because it’s easy to fold and cut through. I really like the “60GSM” weight paper because it’s a little thinner. You could also use construction paper, but bear in mind that it will be thicker & harder to cut through! (Check out my supplies page for recommendations)

  • Scissors with a nice sharp point

  • Hole punch: I used 1/8” and 1/16” hand punches for these, but you could use 1/4” if you are going to make bigger snowflakes

  • If you want to make this super easy, you can download the Holiday Paper Snowflake pattern pack, which includes the bat & pumpkin patterns!

Watch the video tutorial

If you’re a visual person, this video tutorial walks you step-by-step through cutting out the Ghost, Bat, and Pumpkin paper snowflakes!

Cutting out the Ghost Paper Snowflake

  1. Start by folding your white paper and trimming off the ends (check out the How to Fold a Paper Snowflake Like a Pro post for more info!)

  2. Use the 1/16” hole punch to create an eye

  3. Make a small happy mouth (or a scary or surprised mouth, it’s your snowflake!)

  4. Cut around the top of your ghost’s head, and give it a little arm

  5. Cut under the arm & give your ghost a little tail (you can choose the frilly ghost bottom like I did here, or a long, whispy, pointed bottom)

  6. Unfold & enjoy!

Cutting out the Bat Paper Snowflake

  1. Start by folding your black paper and trimming off the ends (check out the How to Fold a Paper Snowflake Like a Pro post for more info!)

  2. Use the 1/16” hole punch to create an eye

  3. Make a small happy mouth with fangs

  4. Cut around the top of your bat’s head, and cut up to give it the top of its wing

  5. Cut a little foot and trim the scalloped under-wing

  6. Unfold & enjoy!

Cutting out the Pumpkin Paper Snowflake

  1. Start by folding your orange paper and trimming off the ends (check out the How to Fold a Paper Snowflake Like a Pro post for more info!)

  2. Use the 1/8” hole punch to create an eye

  3. Make a triangle nose and a happy, toothy mouth (again, it’s up to you! try out different faces if you’d like!)

  4. Cut around the top of your pumpkin’s head, starting with the stem

  5. Cut around the bottom of the pumpkin

  6. Unfold & enjoy!

There you have it! Pretty easy right? Maybe decorating isn’t that hard after all… and maybe these will be hanging in my house until February ;)
